A thematic map on conservation conflicts in protected areas in India reveals how the strict wildlife policies have undermined the rights of indigenous & local communities. It has been developed by the EJAtlas team in collaboration with Kalpavriksh, India.

Ksi Lisims Floating LNG Terminal, British Colombia, Canada
Ksi Lisims LNG project is owned by Rockies LNG, Western LNG and the Nisga's Nation, one of the indigenous groups to the area. It has been hailed the "world's first Indigenous-led, low and zero-carbon" LNG project, yet it divides opinions between various indigenous groups to the area, with many citizens voicing their concerns around the environmental and health impacts the project will have.
Shrinkage and slow restoration of Lake Urmia, Iran
The shrinking of the great Lake Urmia after dam building and groundwater pumping reduced water inflow turning the lake into an immense desert of salt.
Geothermal Power Plant in Padarincang, Java, Indonesia
Padarincang communities successfully halted the development of a geothermal project due to concerns over environmental repercussions and damages to their traditional livelihoods. As long as the project license has not yet been revoked, their resistance continues.
PFAS contamination originating from firefighting foams in Marinette, Wisconsin, USA
Marinette and neighbouring communities have been suffering the impacts of forever chemical contamination linked to firefighting training and testing operations. Several settlements have been reached with the company responsible for the contamination.

The Sanrizuka Struggle over the Narita Airport, Japan
Local farmers and residents of Sanrizuka Village organized against the construction of the new Narita Airport starting in 1963 and for many years afterwards. They deployed many forms of resistance and they endured violent repression.
Nordic Waste, Dinamarca

Tropical Timber Trade and the Sarawak CUT Campaign, Tate Modern, London UK
Timber is often seen as a sustainable building material. However, indigenous communities from Sarawak, Malaysia, in 2023 protested outside the Tate Modern in London to highlight the impact of global timber trade. In collaboration with Friends of the Earth, they launched the Clean Up the Tropical Timber Trade Campaign, aimed to make aware timber consumers.
Iron ore extraction in Karnataka, India and its environmental impact
In October 2002, KIOCL ceased mining in Kudremukh, Karnataka, India, following an eight-year legal battle, marking a significant win for environmentalists. Kudremukh, nestled in the Western Ghats, hosted one of India's largest open cast iron mines causing extensive deforestation, soil erosion, landslides, and water pollution, damaging the ecosystem and local communities.
Land grabbing by palm oil company PT HIP in Buol, Indonesia
Buol farmers were displaced by palm oil company PT HIP. For years, the company has not been paying local residents the compensation it promised them in 2012. Despite repeated interventions, the company has not resolved the issues with the Buol community.
